It’s important to do everything we can to feel our best. One way we can stay on top of our health is scheduling regular eye exams. Annual exams help keep our bodies healthy and our vision clear.

After noticing she couldn’t see her newborn daughter very well, even while wearing glasses, one new mother visited an optometrist located next to a LensCrafters for an answer. Dr. Ashley Owyang used Optomap® to get a detailed image of the back of the patient’s eye, and together with the mother, discovered the patient’s optic nerves were swollen.

The doctor recommended she visit a specialist immediately, and the mother was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebri, which can result in vision loss. Thanks to her exam, this mother was able to quickly identify and treat her illness.

Learn more about the mother’s story below.

“My patient was a young woman who hadn’t had an eye exam in over five years. She had noticed that she was getting a lot of headaches recently and needing to wear her glasses on a full-time basis, so she decided to get an eye exam.  She was complaining that even with her glasses on, she couldn’t see her newborn daughter very well.  She only wore her glasses occasionally; mainly for computer and reading work.  She had never had any complains about her distance vision. She has autoimmune conditions and thought maybe these were causing her change in vision, or possibly the change in hormones from her recent pregnancy.

I performed a comprehensive exam using Optomap, a tool using a non-invasive laser to scan the eye and provide me with a detailed image of the back of her eyes. We evaluated and reviewed the Optomap images together and discovered that her optic nerves were swollen. I showed her what a normal Optomap image looks like and compared it to her retinal scan, and used the visual to stress the importance of immediately being evaluated by a specialist.

After her exam, the mother was grateful we detected her swollen optic nerves, which prompted an urgent referral to a specialist. The specialist diagnosed her with Pseudotumor Cerebri, which can cause swelling of the optic nerve and result in vision loss.  Optomap is such an important tool that we use every day to provide the highest quality of care to our patients.”
